How do you measure something complex for the first time? We began to ask this question in 2021 when designing an evaluation of collective power – an unmeasured concept that describes centering community voice and equity within coalitions. Coalitions continue to center those most impacted by their initiatives to promote systemic change, and we wanted to follow suit by centering these and other coalition advocates in how we measured collective power. During this demonstration, Innovation Network will present its approach for developing a new tool, Powered Together: A Pulse Check for Coalition Power, Equity, and Strength, for measuring collective power in coalitions. This unique tool was designed with definitions and indicators identified by diverse coalition members to ensure that the tool is most useful them. We will share details about our participatory approach to developing the tool and how our team’s diverse experience informed the tool. By including and collaborating with advocates in our work, we can better understand their needs and co-develop more viable and useful measurement tools and products.
